The linoleography is an art printing technique on paper, cardboard or cloth by the use of a matrix formed by etching a tablet of linoleum.
You put the printing ink by a roller on the tablet and try to distribute it uniformly.
You then lie on the matrix a sheet of paper, which has been previously moistened and you do join it rubbing repeatedly.
The matrix can be used to print multiple copies of the project, until it is worn. In any case the linoleography is a printing technique of short-run (usually a few tens of copies).
It is a printing technique, which is relatively recent. Originally, in fact, the linoleum was simply a flooring material and only since the beginning of 1900 it was used as an artistic material.
The first artists who use the linoleum as printing material are the German Expressionists, particularly Kandinsky. In America, the linoleography was introduced in 1910.
In 1911, linoleography in more colors spreads in Britain thanks to the work of Claude Flight.
Manufactured by mixing together linseed oil, cork dust and colophony hanging on a trellis jute, linoleum presents a smooth, compact surface, which can be easily engraved with gouges. The etching technique is not different than the woodcut. The linoleum is easier to work with than wood, since it has no veining.
